Welcome, I'm Joi Hunt, the calligraphy artist behind Bien Fait Calligraphy based in Lake Forest, on the north shore of Chicago, Illinois.
Pointed pen calligraphy is for me the perfect blend of everything I love: color, texture, the glisten of wet ink, the nib gliding across paper, and using my hands to create something beautiful, inspiring, and meaningful for my clients.
My pointed pen style is informed from instruction and study in Copperplate, Spencerian, Engrosser's Script, English Roundhand, and Italian Hand. I have been fortunate to study with Master Penman and Master Calligraphers, including Mike Kecseg, John DeCollibus, Harvest Crittenden, James Farrell, Michael Sull, Heather Held, and Dr. Joe Vitolo. I have earned a Certificate of Calligraphy in Copperplate from the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society of the UK (CLAS). I pour over gorgeous historical exemplars from penman of the past, and interpret them for how we use calligraphy today.
I am a member of the Chicago Calligraphy Collective and currently serve on the Board of Directors. I am also a member of the International Association of Master Penman and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH).
I love to share my addiction to all things ink and nibs, teaching beginner calligraphy classes locally at Smitten Boutique, Greer, Elizabeth Grace, Soho House Chicago, and Macy's State Street, and across the US at Smitten on Paper, in Monrovia, California; Oblation Papers and Press in Portland, Oregon; and in Soho NYC.
Bien Fait is a French phrase, meaning "made well". Everything I do is crafted with this spirit. Made well and made with love.
“I recently worked with Bien Fait Calligraphy to create a custom wedding suite. My husband and I were blown away by Joi's professionalism, talent, and craftsmanship. She is a true artist and a pleasure to work with. I would highly recommend working with Bien Fait Calligraphy on your next project! ”
